(Washington, D.C.) – Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) President Tom Schatz issued the following statement following the release of President Donald Trump’s fiscal year (FY) 2020 budget proposals for Major Savings and Reforms:

“Every taxpayer dollar that is wasted is a dollar not spent on the critical functions of the federal government, which is why rooting out waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement is so important.  Thousands of federal programs are duplicative, fragmented, or outside of the purview of the federal government.  Others can be more effectively managed by states, cities, local officials, and the private sector.

“On November 1, 2018, CAGW sent 16 federal agencies dozens of recommended cuts to wasteful and duplicative programs in response to President Trump’s “Nickel Plan” to reduce agency budgets by five percent across the board for FY 2020.  We are thankful that our recommendations comprised 74 percent of those agencies’ budget savings.  There are additional recommendations in the budget from CAGW’s Prime Cuts database and the Congressional Pig Book

“Cutting government waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement has proven to be the most difficult task in Washington.  Every line item has a powerful constituency that will vehemently oppose any fiscally-focused reform.  We encourage President Trump to continue his efforts to cut wasteful spending and implement private-sector principles to make the federal government more efficient and effective.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is the nation's largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.
